Decentralised molecular diagnostics, based on portable and connected PCR systems, is revolutionising this scenario. The article examines how point-of-care testing allows even peripheral facilities to perform rapid genetic analysis on site, reducing reporting times from days to minutes. The clinical and economic benefits are highlighted. The technological solutions adopted to ensure quality and ease of use and the integrated network model with centralised laboratories are discussed.
